Last updated: 2026-06-25
Your travel D-day is the number of days from today until departure — the departure day is D-day, and the day before is D-1.
Add a return date and it also calculates your trip length (days and nights) and the days until your trip ends.

The D-day and trip length are based on calendar dates and do not factor in time zones or flight time; they are for reference only.
How to use it

- Enter your return date — Select your return date. Leave it blank to calculate only the countdown.
- Review the result — Click Calculate to see the days until departure (D-day), trip length, and days until the trip ends.
How D-day notation and the calculation work
D-day is a notation that sets a reference day (here, the trip departure date) at zero and counts the days remaining. The departure day is D-day, the day before is D-1, two days before is D-2, and if the departure has already passed it shows elapsed days such as D+1 or D+2.
| Situation | Notation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Departure in 3 days | D-3 | 3 days until departure |
| Departure tomorrow | D-1 | One day before departure |
| Departure today | D-day | Departure day |
| Departure was yesterday | D+1 | 1 day since departure |
Trip length (days) counts both the departure and return dates. Departing June 1 and returning June 4 makes 4 days (3 nights, 4 days). The number of nights is days minus one. If departure has already started and the return date is still ahead, the days until your trip ends are shown as well.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How is the D-day counted?
This calculator counts the D-day based on the difference between today and the departure date. If departure is today it shows D-day, tomorrow shows D-1, the day after shows D-2, and past dates show elapsed days such as D+1. Following common D-day convention, the departure day itself is labeled D-day.
How is the trip length counted?
Trip length (days) counts both the departure and return dates. For example, departing June 1 and returning June 4 counts as 4 days (3 nights, 4 days). The number of nights is the number of days minus one.
Are time zones (jet lag) factored in?
The D-day and trip length are calculated by calendar date only and do not factor in time zones or flight time. If you are curious about jet lag, use the Jet Lag Calculator too.
Are the dates I enter saved?
The dates you enter are used only in your browser for the calculation and are never sent to or stored on a server. Refreshing the page resets them.
